Turkey Must-See Destinations for First-Time Visitors

Turkey is one of those holiday destinations that never fails to disappoint. Whether you’re a traveller looking to get lost in ancient ruins, lounge on hot sandy beaches or immerse yourself in the country’s best cultural experiences, Turkey delivers – all while remaining a relatively budget-friendly destination.

According to travel advisors ABTA, Turkey is expected to be in the top 10 travel destinations for 2025 and, from our perspective, it’s easy to see why. Not only are accommodation and food prices reasonable but there are so many exciting locations to see.

Here are four places you simply can’t miss if you’re visiting Turkey for the first time.

1. Istanbul

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is the gateway to Turkey, so naturally, it deserves a spot on your travel itinerary. It straddles both Asia and Europe, making it a place where cultures collide to create something unique.

No trip to Istanbul would be complete without marvelling at the Hagia Sophia. The Hagia Sophia is a Byzantine marvel that has stood through centuries as a church, mosque, and now a museum, complete with a massive dome and breathtaking mosaics.

The Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, where you can spend hours browsing carpets, jewellery and spices.

For a different perspective of the city, take a boat tour on the Bosphorus to glide through the waters separating two continents.

2. Cappadocia

Cappadocia Turkey

If you’re seeking something a little more surreal, Cappadocia isn’t one to miss out on. Located in central Turkey, this region is known for its fairy chimneys and otherworldly rock formations, shaped by volcanic activity and erosion over millennia. Over time, these have been carved into homes, churches and Roman monasteries.

A visit to Göreme National Park offers a glimpse into this ancient world, where early Christians sought refuge in underground cities and cliffside sanctuaries.

Cappadocia is one of the most popular ballooning destinations in the world so don’t miss out on the chance to take to the skies in a hot air balloon.

3. Pamukkale

Pamukkale Turkey

Moving westward, Pamukkale offers gleaming white travertine terraces, formed by mineral-rich thermal waters cascading down the hillside that have drawn visitors for centuries.

These natural pools are believed to have healing properties and dipping your feet into the warm, calcium-rich waters feels like stepping into a natural spa.

When planning a holiday to Turkey, you can get the right mix of natural beauty and ancient history by visiting the nearby city of Hierapolis. This once-thriving Greco-Roman city was founded in the 2nd century BC and today, you can explore its well-preserved ruins.

4. The Turquoise Coast

Antalya Turkey - The Turquoise Coast

For those in search of sun, sand and sea, the Turquoise Coast has all that and more. This region offers some of the best beach getaways in the Mediterranean, with resort towns like Fethiye, Antalya and Bodrum providing the perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.

Spend your days lounging on golden sand or, for a more adventurous experience, take a yachting trip along the coast.

History buffs can visit the ancient Lycian tombs near Fethiye or explore the ruins of Ephesus.

5. Gökçeada (Imbros) Island

Gokceada Island Turkey

If you’re looking for the biggest and most beautiful Turkish island, Gökçeada (Imbros) in the Aegean Sea is renowned for its unspoiled beauty, natural beaches, and serene atmosphere. It’s a fantastic spot for those seeking tranquility and nature.

What’s more, it’s only a 30-minute (and very scenic) ferry ride away from the charming little town of Kabatepe.
